It’s been a while since I did a Music in Action post, but I feel like this one will make up for it.
(Honestly, I’m tempted to just post the video and let it speak for itself.)
This piece has been out for a little while, but it’s new to me, and it’s fantastic!
Science vs. Music?
No.
Cymatics, by Nigel Stanford, is the perfect marriage of music and science. Want to see music manipulate the elements -fire, water, earth (well, sand)? You have to watch this music video.
I was familiar with some of his equipment – the Chladni Plate and Tesla Coil – but others, like the Ferro Fluid and Ruben’s Tube, were new to me. All the experiments are real. And if you want to know just how he does it, he’s provided handy behind-the-scenes videos on each one, so you can get your music/science geek on. And I have. More than once.
So how does this fit with The Music Maker Series? Well, even if it didn’t, I’d still be sharing it with you because it’s just so stinking cool. But, you may be in for some Chladni Plate inspired stuff in future books. And while we’re on the topic of inspiration, the whole video is full of it. Who knows what other ideas might be lurking within?
And be sure to check out Stanford’s other music. It has an epic, textural feel. I’m already a fan.
